OSHA’s permissable exposure limit (PEL) for benzene is 1 part per million (PPM) over an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA) or 5 PPM in 15 minutes. There is no authoritive basis for the claim 50 mg per sq ft is acceptable. In fact, OSHA’s TWA converts to 16 mg/cubic meter which equals 4.8 mg/sq ft, so 50 mg/sq ft is excessive and is even double OSHA‘s short term exposure limit of 24.38 mg/sq ft.
